Hemming/ Alterations Bootcamp

Learn how to make your clothes fit better in our beginner-friendly, two-part Hemming & Alterations Bootcamp!

Across two Sundays from 3-6 PM, you’ll learn the basics of measuring, pinning, pressing, and sewing hems, followed by simple clothing alterations such as taking in seams, adjusting fit, and repairing open seams.

Bring one or two beginner-friendly garments to work on or practice using the fabric swatches provided in our studio. Sewing machines, tools, materials, and guided instruction are included.

No alterations experience is required. Registration includes both workshop dates.

Part 1 Hemming Basics Workshop

Sunday Nov 1st & 8th | 3-6 PM Beginner-Friendly | No Alterations Experience Required

Do you have pants that are too long, a dress that needs shortening, or a garment sitting in your closet because the hem just isn’t right?

Join us at The Creative Place for our hands-on Hemming Basics Workshop, designed for beginners who want to learn practical alteration skills they can use at home.

During this two-hour workshop, our instructor will guide you through the process of measuring, marking, pinning, pressing, and sewing a clean, even hem. You may bring one simple garment from home to work on, or practice with fabric swatches and materials provided by our studio.

What You’ll Learn

  • How to determine the correct finished length

  • How to measure and mark an even hemline

  • How to use pins, fabric-marking tools, and a seam gauge

  • How to properly press and prepare a hem

  • The difference between common types of hems

  • How to sew a basic hem by hand

  • How to sew a clean hem using a sewing machine

  • How to choose the appropriate stitch, needle, and thread

  • Tips for creating a neat, professional-looking finish

What to Bring

You may bring one to two beginner-friendly garments you would like to hem, such as:

  • Pants or jeans

  • A simple skirt

  • A simple dress

  • A shirt or basic top

  • Pajama pants

Don’t have a garment to bring? No problem! Fabric swatches and practice materials will be provided so you can learn each technique before trying it on your own clothing.

What’s Included

  • Three hours of guided instruction

  • Use of our sewing machines

  • Practice fabric and materials

  • Thread and basic sewing tools

  • Step-by-step instructor support

  • A welcoming and creative learning environment

Garment Guidelines

For the best beginner experience, please do not bring formalwear, bridalwear, lined garments, leather, delicate fabrics, tailored jackets, heavily embellished clothing, or expensive and sentimental items.

Garments will be reviewed by the instructor at the beginning of class. Because every garment is constructed differently, completion of a personal item during the workshop cannot be guaranteed.

Important Information

This is an educational, hands-on workshop—not a drop-off alteration service. Participants will learn how to hem their own garments with guidance from the instructor.

No alteration experience is required. Basic sewing-machine familiarity is helpful but not necessary.

Space is limited to ensure every participant receives hands-on support. Reserve your seat and learn a practical sewing skill you can use again and again!

PART 2 BASIC CLOTHING ALTERATIONS | Sunday Nov 8 | 3-6 PM Beginner-Friendly |

No Alterations Experience Required

Do you have clothing that almost fits—but needs a small adjustment?

Join us at The Creative Place for our Basic Clothing Alterations Workshop, where beginners will learn how to make simple fit adjustments and repairs to everyday clothing.

During this two-hour workshop, our instructor will demonstrate how to assess a garment, identify the seams that can be adjusted, pin for a better fit, and sew a clean alteration. You may bring one beginner-friendly garment from home or practice the techniques using fabric swatches provided by our studio.

What You’ll Learn

  • How to assess the fit and construction of a garment

  • How to identify which seams can be safely adjusted

  • How to pin and mark a garment for a better fit

  • How to take in a simple side seam

  • How to adjust a basic waistband

  • How to repair an open or damaged seam

  • How to maintain an even seam allowance

  • How to finish raw edges neatly

  • How to press an alteration for a professional-looking finish

  • How to recognize when an alteration requires advanced tailoring

What to Bring

You may bring one to two simple garments you would like to adjust or repair, such as:

  • A basic shirt or blouse that needs to be taken in

  • A simple skirt with side seams

  • Pants with a basic waistband

  • Pajama pants or elastic-waist clothing

  • A garment with an open or damaged seam

Don’t have a garment to bring? No problem! Practice fabric, sample seams, and other learning materials will be provided.

What’s Included

  • Three hours of guided instruction

  • Use of our sewing machines

  • Practice fabric and sample materials

  • Thread and basic sewing tools

  • Step-by-step instructor support

  • A welcoming and creative learning environment

Garment Guidelines

For the best beginner experience, please do not bring:

  • Formalwear or bridalwear

  • Blazers, suits, or tailored jackets

  • Lined garments

  • Leather or very thick fabrics

  • Delicate, stretchy, or slippery fabrics

  • Clothing requiring zipper replacement

  • Clothing that needs major resizing or reconstruction

  • Heavily embellished, expensive, or sentimental garments

The instructor will review personal garments at the beginning of class to determine whether the project is appropriate for a beginner workshop. Because every garment is constructed differently, completion of a personal item during the workshop cannot be guaranteed.

Important Information

This is an educational, hands-on workshop—not a drop-off alteration service. Participants will complete their own work with guidance and support from the instructor.

No alterations experience is required. Basic sewing-machine familiarity is recommended. Participants may take this workshop independently, but completing our Hemming Basics Workshop first is encouraged.

Space is limited to ensure every participant receives hands-on support. Reserve your seat and begin learning how to make your clothing fit and function better!
